History & Background

Tihu College came into existence on July 4, 1963 in a small rural town of Tihu, which was then an agro-based centre of local commerce for the greater Tihu- Sarthebari- Bajali -Dharmapur- Simlaguri area. Under the enthusiastic guidance of three noble and provident visionaries ( DR. Akshay Thakuria, Mr. Lalit Talukdar, Mr. Madhu Pathak) who are by now departed souls, it was established solely on public donation and people’s enthusiastic participation. The public of greater Tihu locality started collecting funds, for which they approached every villager, shop kipper, office and businessmen who contributed according to their capacity. After admitting many of the teething pains, overcoming many challenges, they succeeded in founding an institution of higher education in a backward, remote rural place of Assam in the early 1960s.There was an enrolment of 177 students in its 1st year PU (Arts) Class.

The College started its first classes in the Gandhi Bhavan of Tihu Town under the dedicated guidance of six lecturers excluding the Principal. It started classes only under Arts faculty having six subjects. The primary objective of this institution remains to pursue and make higher education more accessible and more affordable for rural based learners among others. The College was shifted to its permanent building in the year 1966, when the enrolment had gone up to 264 students, and instructions were imparted up to Degree level.

The institution developed into a multi-faculty college with introduction of the Science Stream (PU) in the session 1983-84 and B Sc in the year 1986-87, which was brought under the deficit Grants-in-Aid system in the yearI996.

Even after the emergence of almost a dozen of colleges in the same hinterland Tihu College still continues to rightfully claim the status of a premier institution of this kind by seeing and showing the marks of progress in all respects to the satisfaction of the students and guardians concerned along with the elite education-enthusiasts of this vast area.

With two full-fledged streams of Arts and Science, and offering Major course in almost all the teaching Departments (in T.D C Level) Tihu College continues to add new feathers in its cap so far as its academic excellence is concerned. It has by now 14 Departments in both the streams.

It is however a delight to declare that apart from the academic progress the College moves ahead with the objective of the fullest exploration of inherent talents of the students in extra curricular area. Earning its recognition in the concerned area, Tihu College welcomes and entertains the talents with due weight in admission process providing all possible infrastructural facilities.

Tihu College is assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore, in 2004 and accredited with "B+" grade, it vows to attain further progress and run ahead in the days to come with the unstinting support of the students, the guardians, the alumni and the society by and large.
